Avian Flu

In the list of threats to global economies presented to delegates to the World Economic Forum recently, the flu came in second only to rising oil prices and ahead of terrorism. Why are governments across the world, including officials in the United States, sounding the alarm about the possibility of a pandemic outbreak of bird or avian flu? How real is the threat?
