Frank Merickel Biography

Frank Merickel was raised on a ranch in southern Oregon. Long summers and plenty of open space provided the ideal laboratory conditions in which to observe and study natures most dominant group of critters, the insects. Ants were a topic of complete fascination by the age of six and many a “gallon jar colony” graced his nightstand. It was not until his late teens that an actual name and profession could be assigned (much less pronounced!) to this interest and even later that the prospects of earning a living discovered. An undergraduate degree in Entomology from the UI and MS in Entomology from Texas Tech University provided formal structure to this passion. Prior to coming to the UI, the ants remained a fascination while exploring the ant fauna of West Texas. For the last twenty years Frank has enjoyed curating the WFBARR Entomology museum as the Collection Manager. One of the most pleasurable parts of his job is talking to kids about insects. If not in the “Center of the Universe” as Frank calls the museum, he can be found tending the vegetable garden, camping with his family, coaching soccer or being a“mat rat”.
