HJR 2 - Constitutional Amendment on Marriage

On Thursday, November 2, at 8:00/7:00 p.m. MT/PT, a special hour-long edition of Dialogue will examine a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman. The amendment also validates marriage as the only domestic union recognized by the state.

Guests include: Rep. Lawerence Denney (R-Midvale), one of the sponsors of the amendment, Bryan Fischer of the Idaho Values Alliance, and Jim East and Kim Beswick of "Idaho Votes No."

Idaho is one of eight states with constitutional amendments on the ballot outlawing same-sex marriages. 20 states currently have similar definitions of marriage in their constitutions.

Idaho currently has a statute defining marriage as being between a man and a woman, but proponents of the constitutional amendment say it's needed to make sure those statutes aren't challenged and overturned. Opponents say that the proposal is too far-reaching by outlawing all domestic partnerships short of marriage, and will affect heterosexual couples as well.
