The Challenge of the Unknown is a series of 7 films about math and problem solving complete with comprehensive teaching materials. The series is designed for use in elementary/secondary math and science classrooms. The goal is to show math in a new light to help students understand how to solve complex problems. The films illustrate key problem formulation processes we all use, and show people wrestling with a wide range of problems in the real world. The problem solvers use math as a tool: it makes their tasks easier. Comedy segments interspersed with documentary segments demonstrate how problems cannot be solved by someone who is not thinking but is just pushing ahead, trying to force the problem to yield an answer.

1 Situation/Where Am I?
2 Information/What do I do?
3 Restatement/Haven't I seen this?
4 Outcomes/Where am I going?
5 Management/What do I do next?
6 Estimation/Am I close?
7 Argument/Am I right?

This series proves that math is all around us, and that contrary to popular belief math is an exciting, organic phenomenon that influences us every day. Hosted by Danny glover.

101 Seeing is Believing:
From IMAX films to modern art and virtual reality, math helps define space and present visions of the world. Examples of math at work include special effects in movies and renaissance paintings.

102 The Numbers Game
Sports and math have long been tied together-batting averages, golf, handicaps, odds at the racetrack, even the geometry of the baseball diamond. In the push to run faster, jump farther and reach for the limits of the athlete's body.

103 Patterns of Nature
Math helps biologists solve puzzles, including why zebras have stripes instead of spots.

104 Chance of a lifetime
Statistics help people predict everything from the weather to the roulette wheel.

105 Shape the World
Centuries before Columbus, the Greeks used math to determine the size and shape of the planet.

106 A New Age
Math is a bigger part of everyday life than most people realize. Math tames the vast amount of information available to us today.

107 Making a difference
Educators, researchers, and parents explore new ways to make math make sense. Math education looks very different from what it used to be.
