5. The ancient Hawaiians were ruled by a monarchy believed to be endowed with special spiritual power, lived off the land, fished, used rafts and canoes, cooked in on open earth oven, and believed in many gods and legends.

6. Hawai'i has many cultures from many lands. It is the most diverse in the nation. Hawai'i depends heavily on tourism for its economy. The cost of living is 40 percent higher than that of living on the U.S. mainland, but average wages are only 10 percent higher.
