Basin Butte Lookout
One of the most recently refurbished lookouts is Basin Butte, located a few miles north of Stanley in the Challis National Forest. It sits on a vantage point with sweeping views of the Sawtooth Mountains.
First built in 1934 the lookout began to show its age after it was taken out of service in 1989. Then a couple of years ago a group of volunteers from the public along with Forest Service and BLM crews helped repair and refurbish the building. The careful restoration won a preservation award and restored the lookout to its 1930s splendor. In the near future the general public will be able to rent the Basin Butte Lookout and experience the incredible views and solitude it has to offer.
