The Clark Fork Delta is one of the larger wetland areas in North Idaho. Located near Lake Pend Oreille, the delta is an area formed by the main branches of the Clark Fork River, as it branches to the lake. It is a haven for birds of all kinds: osprey, kingfishers, bald eagles, swallows and song birds.
The best way to visit the delta is in canoe or kayak. Larger boats run the risk of hitting one of the many underwater hazards, since the water is not very deep in places.
Some of the local kayakers have mapped out a water trail which takes boaters around islands and estuaries; the trail is about seven miles in length, although shorter versions are certainly possible.
