A hillside at Craters of the Moon

Craters of the Moon is a sacred area to the Shoshone-Bannock peoples. The ancestors of today's tribal members were living in the region during the area's last eruptions. Their oral traditions, passed down through generations, explain the origins of Craters of the Moon. Because these legends are supposed to be told only during the winter, tribal member Lavern Broncho held a traditional prayer ceremony asking the creator to forgive us for talking out of season before he shared these legends.
