Serpent Legend

Lava flow

The Shoshone Bannocks at the time knew that there was a giant serpent out here. He was very large and the Shoshone Bannocks were frightened of this serpent. But actually, the serpent didn’t bother anyone.

Before Craters of the Moon was actually formed, it used to be a huge mountain. This serpent was so big that one day he coiled around the mountain just to sun himself. And as he was sunning himself, thunderclouds came in.

Lightening started bouncing around the serpent, which kind of annoyed him, so he tightened up his coil around the mountain. As the clouds got closer and the lightening kept striking closer, the serpent kept tightening his coil. Every time lightening would strike, the serpent would tighten up his coil more.

Lava flow

The serpent coiled around the mountain so tight that all of a sudden the mountain started falling apart. He coiled himself so tight around the mountain that the mountain started melting. It caught on fire. As he kept tightening up his coil, the rocks started melting into lava. Well, the serpent knew what he did, so he tried to get away from it but because the serpent was a slow mover, the hot lava that he created when he coiled around the mountain caught up to him and burned him.

So, even today, as you drive through the highway road here, you can actually see the remnants of that serpent. That was the start of Craters of the Moon.
