Skijoring is a Scandinavian sport where a cross-country skier gets a little extra pulling power from an animal. Some use horses. Others use dogs. Our story focuses on skijoring with Grace, a Great Pyrenees and her owner Paul Lyshaug.
The beauty of the skijoring is its simplicity. All you need is basic cross-county ski gear, a harness for your dog, a skijoring belt for your waist and a towline. Almost any dog over 30 pounds can participate. He/She just needs a desire to pull and to run.
Most skijorers are recreational skiers, but there are competitive races. Top skijorers can sprint at 30 mph and average of 20mph over a five-mile race.
