Putting on a Mock Legislature By Gail Bray
The mock legislature is a wonderful way to teach American Government students about the legislative branch of government - both state and federal - in a hands-on, discovery fashion. It is so special to watch students who might not otherwise be engaged, become "Senators" and "Representatives", "Lt Governors" or "Speakers" and actively "play" their parts as they learn in the very best method known...by doing it themselves.
The materials are provided. Initially, your energy level will need to be high as you prepare, but after the students begin the actual "legislative session" you will sit back and marvel at THEIR energy! Involving all the A.G. classes at a school heightens the excitement and commitment of all involved. Having one teacher's classes "match up" with another's, one serving as the Senate (based on whose class the Lt. Governor is in) and the other as the House, "ups the ante" and increases the quality of the writing and research on bills, as well as, the debate. Using actual Idaho legislative bills expands the learning opportunity beyond just the concept to real life issues.
Students remark that the mock legislature is the highlight of their year and I'm convinced that they will remember it long after they have left our classrooms and have forgotten many other concepts to which we expose them. They DO the legislative branch and by doing they are encouraged to go out and be more active, concerned citizens. To preserve our democracy that ultimately should be our goal. This is a very fun way to contribute toward that end and I urge you to give it a try. Once you have, you will love it...and so will your students! Please don't hesitate to ask for help to get started. This wonderful package is complete but if you need a nudge, call or e-mail! Gail Bray 338-3575 (Boise Senior High) BRAYG@BOI1.SD01.K12.ID.US
