Winslow Homer: Society and Solitude

WINSLOW HOMER: SOCIETY AND SOLITUDE profiles the life and work of one of the greatest American artists of his time (1836-1910). Two one-hour programs chronicle Winslow Homer's evolution from wood-engraver to Harper's Weekly illustrator to an innovative watercolorist best known for his evocative oil paintings. The documentary features more than 180 of the artist's paintings, watercolors, etchings and illustrations and extensive on-location footage of places immortalized in some of Homer's most famous works.

After 1880, Winslow Homer's painting evolved in a different way. During the final decades of his life he created a series of masterpieces that led to his reputation as the most profound visual poet of the sea, and of elemental themes of nature in general. He was the master of more than one medium: indeed, his innovative work in watercolor is - for many - an even greater achievement than the oil paintings for which he is so well known. D
