Northern abolitionists and Southern slaveholders clash, both maintaining God is on their side. President Abraham Lincoln puts his faith in reason over revelation, yet confronted with mounting war casualties and his son's death, he begins a transformational spiritual journey. Then, in the late 19th century, Protestant denominations are challenged by new ideas about the history and authority of the Bible. Waves of European immigrants change the face of American religion.
