Orangutan Diary

Deep in the Borneo rainforest, a dedicated team of vets and care-givers have a massive and emotional task ahead of them: to rescue and nurse back to health the jungle's most appealing - and most vulnerable - animals. There are currently 600 (approx.) vulnerable orangutans being cared for, day and night, at the Borneo Orangutan Foundation. Most have had traumatic lives, clinging to survival as rainforests are burned around them, or snatched from the wild to be sold as pets. For the team of vets and care-givers, every day is a challenge - not only nursing the orphans, but also . . .

Episode Description
Friday, Mar 28, 2014 - 9:00 PM    After months of planning, a handful of rescued orangutans are flying to freedom. On board are Mama Abut and her baby, found starving in an oil palm plantation but nursed back to health at the Centre, which is home to 600 rescued orangutans babies in the nursery needing 24-hour care, orphans in Forest School learning the skills they will need in the wild, and older ones almost ready for release. After a terrifying fall at the Centre, Sumanto fights for his life, while deep in the jungle the rescue team has to think fast when a powerful male decides he would rather not be rescued. D
