Mather embraces the opportunity and works to build more roads in the parks. Enthusiasts like Margaret and Edward Gehrke of Nebraska begin "collecting" parks, visiting as many as they can. In North Carolina a reclusive writer and a Japanese immigrant join forces to launch a campaign to protect the last stands of virgin forest in the Smoky Mountains by establishing it as a park.
