Alcohol, embedded in the fabric of American culture since Colonial times, by 1830 was dangerously abused with a national consumption three times today's use. A spiritual fervor sweeps the country, igniting a temperance campaign even as European immigrants arrive with their own drinking customs. Carrie Nation attacks bars with stones and hatchets.
