(November 1943-June 1944) The Japanese empire still stretches 4,000 miles; U.S. Marines set out to prove a point on the Pacific atoll of Tarawa. Mobile, Alabama, Sacramento, California, and Waterbury, Connecticut, are transformed into booming, overcrowded "war towns." African Americans, serving in segregated armed forces demand equal rights, including combat duty. Japanese-American men are permitted to form a special unit, the 442nd.
