Invitation to World Literature  "The Tale of Genji"  This portrait of court life in medieval Japan follows the life and exploits of the great Genji. Written by Murasaki Shikibu, a lady of the Japanese court, it provides an insider's view of Japanese court life, the official and behind the screen. Art, clothing, music from the time of the novel illustrate the obserations of authors Jane Smiley and Chiori Miyagawa, among others. D

Invitation to World Literature  "Journey to the West"  The powerful and mischievous Stone Monkey King brings chaos to heaven and earth. Freed from a mountain prison in order to guard a Chinese monk on his journey to retrieve the Buddhist scriptures from India, Monkey seeks his own spiritual transformation. Modern performance, contemporary art, and Buddhist philosophers provide a rich context to the ancient tale. D

Connecting with the Arts: A Workshop for Middle Grades Teachers  "Workshop 8. Reflecting On Our Practice"  This program explores methods for assessing instructional practice. Participants will see teachers reflecting alone and interacting with colleagues to evaluate and refine their planning and teaching. To conclude, the discussion group models a protocol that allows teachers to draw on the expertise of colleagues to refine their practice. D

Assessment In Math and Science: What's The Point?  "I Didn't Know This Was An English Class"  One measure of students' depth of understanding is the connections they can make across disciplines. This workshop explores how teachers canencourage these connections by designing performance tasks that build on other disciplines. D

Equitrekking  "Georgia Coast"  On Sea Island, Equitrekking host Darley Newman rides with a naturalist and tries what the island natives call "swim riding." On secluded Cumberland Island, Darley observes wild horses with local naturalist Fred Whitehead, who speaks about herd dynamics, the history of horses on the island and how they survive in the subtropical environment. Darley stays at the island's only lodging, the historic Greyfield Inn, and learns about the Carnegie family's role in the island's history. D
