These railways were built during the 19th century by the British to move troops and raw materials across the land, and ultimately played a role in the independence of the country a century later. The railway tracks are some of the oldest and longest you'll find anywhere in the world, and train travel doesn't get any tougher than this in a country with a population of over 1.2 billion. D

Rick Steves' Europe  "Southeast England"  Arcing along the southeast coast of England, Rick travels from Canterbury (with its famous cathedral) to Dover (stoutly fortified from Roman times to the Battle of Britain). Then he hikes the trails that top the towering chalk cliffs of the South Downs, wander into the beachy resort of Brighton (England's Coney Island), and push on to Portsmouth, whose naval heritage has left it with the best collection of historic sailing ships anywhere. NOVA  "Escape from Nazi Alcatraz"  Imprisoned in the notorious Colditz Castle, a group of British officer POWs plan an escape. In a secret attic workshop, they construct a two-man glider out of bed sheets and floorboards, hoping to fly to freedom from the roof of the castle. But the war ends before they can use it.G

Filmed in front of a live audience and with special guests joining them on stage, Kirsty and David discuss the many pivotal moments of his life, from collecting fossils in the Lake District during his childhood through to his pioneering work on natural history programmes that have inspired, entertained and educated so many people around the world. David's fascinating stories are illustrated with footage from the BBC's extensive natural history archive, highlighting some of the most unforgettable moments of his career. D
