Lincoln-Douglas debates foreshadow future Harper's Ferry Raid convinces South they'll never be safe in the Union. Election of 1860 divides country; Abraham Lincoln wins ballot.G

Unfinished Nation  "House Divided"  Election of Abraham Lincoln spawns secession of seven states led by South Carolina. Confederate States form provisional government before Lincoln is inaugurated, take over two southern forts. Neither side believes there will be war, but attack on Fort Sumter by Confederate forces signals beginning of conflict. Both sides mobilize quickly. Union has material advantage; Confederates win early battles. Lincoln and Union generals want to minimize damage to South so they can come back into Union. Influence of border states. Confiscation Acts address problem of captured and runaway slaves. War becomes harder with no end in sight.G

Biography of America, A  "America at Its Centennial"  As America celebrates its centennial, 5 million people descend on Philadelphia to celebrate America's technological achievements, but some of the early principles of the Republic remain unrealized. Professor Miller and his team of historians examine where America is in 1876 and discuss the question of race. D

Biography of America, A  "Industrial Supremacy"  Steel and stockyards are featured in this program as the mighty engine of industrialism thunders forward at the end of the nineteenth century. Professor Miller continues the story of the American Industrial Revolution in New York and Chicago, looking at the lives of Andrew Carnegie, Gustavus Swift, and the countless workers in the packinghouse and on the factory floor. D

Cyberchase  "Codename: Icky"  (topic: Codes) - In the watery depths of cybersite Aquari-yum, the kids and Hacker go in search of a giant cyber-slug, who feeds on pure energy. The kids and Digit travel underwater in two separate vessels, but Hacker has a listening device that taps into their communications system, allowing him to overhear their plans - and track every move they make. The kids outsmart Hacker by devising a series of codes so they can send messages back and forth in secret - even though Hacker can hear what they're saying. D

Architect Sally DeGan and Tom use a 3-D model to preview the plan for aging in place, and work begins. D

Travelscope  "Swiss Roots"  Joseph joins his producer and wife, Julie, on her search for her Swiss roots in and around Lucerne, Switzerland. Their hunt takes Travelscope atop Mount Pilatus where they scale the local peaks, try their hand at cheese making and then travel across Lake Lucerne to historic alp horn and handoergeli (Swiss accordion) shops in the village of Schwyz. In Ebikon and Koelliken Julie takes a walk in her grandparents' footsteps and shares a glass of local wine and a pot of fondue with her long-lost and newly-met Swiss relatives. D

Lidia's Italy In America  "California: Pasta - The Ultimate Showcase"  Lidia returns to California to visit Andy Boy farm and learns all about broccoli rabe. Later, Lidia meets up with Dino Cortopassi, owner of Corto Olive, to hear his family's colorful culinary history. Join Lidia and Grandma in the kitchen as she makes Baked Stuffed Shells, Penne with Artichokes, and Bacon Orecchiette with Andy Boy's Broccoli Rabe. D
