In Search of the Novel  "Why Do I Have to Read This Book?"  The workshop's 10 novels are examined to see why they appear on recommended reading lists and why they have earned numerous awards. The program looks at the essential elements of good writing and storytelling and explores positive reasons for reading. It also examines ways in which novels are challenged by students and communities. D

Economics Classroom, The: A Workshop for Grade 9-12 Teachers  "Why Markets Work"  This session employs market simulations and exercises to illustrate key concepts of the market. D

Mathematics Illuminated  "Making Sense of Randomness"  Probability is the mathematical study of randomness, or events in which the outcome is uncertain. This unit examines probability, tracing its evolution from a way to improve chances at the gaming table to modern applications of understanding traffic flow and financial markets. D

Mathematics Illuminated  "Geometries Beyond Euclid"  Our first exposure to geometry is that of Euclid, in which all triangles have 180 degrees. As it turns out, triangles can have more or less than 180 degrees. This unit explores these curved spaces that are at once otherwordly and firmly of this world. D

Hands On Crafts for Kids  "USA"  The United States is located in North America with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The country has a rich heritage of crafting with many crafts originating with the first inhabitants, the Native Americans, others brought over by immigrants, and lastly traditions developed in the New World. The United States is a true melting pot of cultures. D

Hey Kids, Let's Cook  "Peanut Butter Apple Puffs"  We're going to take an all time kid favorite food combination of fresh apples and peanut butter, and bake those right inside a biscuit, these are called Peanut Butter Apple Puffs. Sound unusual? You will love them! And we'll serve them up with a yummy cider drink and a smoothie.a purple cow!. D

Afterward, Tom shares a tip about finding measurements without doing math. And Richard installs a wireless thermostat to control a heating system. D

The Great American Seafood Cook-Off III   America's finest chefs showcase their seafood-preparation skills in THE GREAT AMERICAN SEAFOOD COOK-OFF III. In 2010, 14 accomplished and up-and-coming chefs from throughout the United States gathered in New Orleans to compete in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off. The event emphasizes the importance of cooking with local, domestic seafood and encourages the use of products from sustainable fisheries. D
