Social Studies In Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12  "Celebrations of Light"  Eileen Mesmer teaches a combined kindergarten and first–grade class in Salem, Massachusetts, a diverse community outside Boston. Ms. Mesmer asks her students to explore the many ways the holidays are celebrated and to find commonalities among the various celebrations. Ms. Mesmer reads to the students from "The Winter Solstice," using it to help students understand the greater theme of community. D

Social Studies In Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12  "Explorers In North America"  Rob Cuddi, a fifth–grade teacher at Winthrop Middle School in Winthrop, Massachusetts, has been teaching for almost 30 years and has recently taken an active role in restructuring the social studies curriculum to accommodate both state and national standards. Mr. Cuddi. D

Hands On Crafts for Kids  "Games and Sports"  What could be more fun than combining games and crafts? Craft a game board, make up a game, or celebrate your favorite team. We begin with team bracelets in your school colors. Then, make a shoe tag for your backpack or sports bag. D

Travel with Kids  "Cabo San Lucas, Mexico: Fun in the Baja Sun"  Travel with Kids heads to the very tip of the Baja Mexico peninsula to find whales, dolphins, zip line over desert canyons, play in the sand & surf and go on their first scuba dive off the coast of Lands End "El Arco." Along the way, they discover the rugged coast and ending point of the Baja 1000 in their own Israeli army made desert dune buggy, take a ride on a bungee trampoline, shop the fun markets of Cabo and learn about the history and culture of this Mexico desert paradise. D

Martha Bakes  "Pate A Choux"  Martha demystifies pate a choux by demonstrating how easy it is to make. Though it may seem intimidating, it's made with only four ingredients and cooked on the stovetop. Once mastered, it can be used to make cream puffs, eclairs, profiteroles and cheesy gougeres. D

Ask This Old House  "Painting Kitchen Cabinets/Installing a Smart Thermostat to Reduce Energy Use"  Host Kevin O'Connor travels to Chicago to learn how subway trains are serviced. While in Chicago, he helps a homeowner paint kitchen cabinets. Then, landscape contractor Roger Cook teaches how to estimate landscape material by the cubic yard. D

Rick Steves' Europe  "Burgundy: Profound France"  Rick takes time to enjoy the region's edible, drinkable, scenic and floatable delights. He travels on a canal barge, visits a medieval hospice and a modern monastery, builds a barrel, appreciates fine Burgundy wine, slurps escargot and eats well.G
