It explores the tension between maintaining order and preserving freedoms, the essential role of politics in addressing the will of the people, and the need for citizens to participate in order to make democracy work. Democracy In America  "Constitution: Fixed Or Flexible?"  This program examines the search for balance between the original Constitution and the need to interpret and adjust it to meet the needs of changing times. It explains the original Jeffersonian-Madisonian debate, the concept of checks and balances, and the stringent procedures for amending the Constitution. D

In Search of the Novel  "Who Owns The Novel?"  This workshop probes the living nature of the novel by illustrating how each reader makes a novel his or her own. It shows how the interpretation of a novel can change, depending on the reader's culture, class, generation, gender, and personality. D

Connecting with the Arts: A Teaching Practices Library, 6-8  "Creating A Culture"  Sixth-graders develop their own cultures, complete with language, clothing, artwork, and rituals. Weeks of hard work culminate in a surprising twist. This program is the first of two parts. D

Connecting with the Arts: A Teaching Practices Library, 6-8  "Analyzing A Culture"  Students become archaeologists, analyzing artifacts from other student-created cultures. They then design a museum exhibit from those artifacts. This program is the second of two parts. D

Assessment In Math and Science: What's The Point?  "When I Was In School...."  Changing old ways is not easy. Communication is the first step toward encouraging support for new assessment strategies. This workshop will focus on the importance of collaboration among teachers, administrators, and especially parents, when implementing assessment reform in a school or district. D

The Great American Seafood Cook-Off III   America's finest chefs showcase their seafood-preparation skills in THE GREAT AMERICAN SEAFOOD COOK-OFF III. In 2010, 14 accomplished and up-and-coming chefs from throughout the United States gathered in New Orleans to compete in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off. The event emphasizes the importance of cooking with local, domestic seafood and encourages the use of products from sustainable fisheries. D

She begins by nestling salmon rillete in endive, and then, with her student Jerry, bakes salmon in the ultimate symbol of love, a paper heart.
