Teaching Reading K-2: A Library of Classroom Practices  "Promoting Readers As Leaders"  Valerie Kostandos believes all her first-grade students in Melrose, Massachusetts should take on the role of leader. This contributes to a learning climate where students see themselves as readers, writers, and leaders who manage their classroom routines. They take attendance, help each other discover the motivation of a character in a text, and make decisions about when they need support in reading. D

Science In Focus: Force and Motion  "Bend and Stretch"  We all expect a spring to stretch or compress when a force is applied, but forces can even deform solid objects like the floor or the top of a table. In this workshop, students in a high school classroom explore ideas about tension and normal force. By applying a force to a spring and measuring the distance the spring is stretched, the students calculate the force constant or stretchiness of the spring. Lecture demonstrations using student volunteers help to illustrate that even rigid objects bend when a force is applied.G

Venture into the countryside of Estonia, to the large island of Saaremaa and the much smaller island of Muhu, where you'll find windmills, thatch-roofed farmhouses and quiet waters. Of special interest is a candid interview with Mart Laar, the prime minister who took over a country that was an economic and psychological basket case following the withdrawal of Soviet troops and-with the help of a flat tax-turned Estonia into one of Europe's most dynamic and forward-thinking little countries. D
