Submit Your Video Questions!

We would love to use your video question on one of our future shows, but here are a few things you should know first. Note: If you want to submit a written question, please use our text question form.

First, you'll need a question. Then, you'll need a device, such as a digital camera, computer, phone or tablet, that can record you asking the question. And, you'll need your parent/guardian available so they can give permission for us to use your video.

What topics are you accepting questions for?

While we will have new content for all our topics, we are accepting questions for only three topics this year. Here is a list of the topics and the deadline for receiving your questions:

Wildfires - Mar. 1st

I've got my question, and my permission. What next?

As you begin, it usually helps to write out a script and practice saying it until you get it just right. Only say your first name. Here is an example script:

Hi, my name is Joan. My question is, Why is the sky blue?

When you are done practicing and your parent or guardian is ready, turn on the camera and start recording.

First, record you and your parent/guardian giving us permission to use the question. Remember, you both need to be in the shot.

Then, center your face and shoulders in the frame of the camera and record your question. Save the file to your computer or phone. Watch it and make sure it looks great! You can try it again until you get it right, but ONLY send us your best one.

Don't forget — make sure you've recorded your parent/guardian's permission too!

What is the best way to get permission?

We cannot use your question without your parent or guardian's permission. The easiest way to do that is have them give permission on your recording before your question. They must be in the picture with you. Here is an example of what they need to say:

My name is (parent or legal guardian's first and last name go here). I give permission for Idaho Public Television to use the video question posted by my child (your first and last name here) on the D4K broadcast program and website or other uses in relation to the program.

You may record your parent's/guardian's permission separately, but the two files must be emailed together and you must be in the same picture as your parent/guardian so we can match the two files together. Here's an example.

How long should my question be?

The length of your video question should be no more than 45 seconds. The permission should also be no longer than 45 seconds. If you combine the two — question and permission — into a single video, the total length should be no more than 2 minutes. Here's an example.

What about video quality?

Your video should be recorded at the best possible resolution and quality. But be warned — you are responsible for the data charges if you send it on your smart phone! So the higher the resolution of your video, the bigger your file will be and the longer it will take to upload.

I'm a teacher; how do I submit questions for my class?

Follow the procedures described above to record and send your students' video questions EXCEPT those regarding parental permission.

Check with your local school district's policy about getting parental permission before recording. Only allow students whose parents have granted permission to submit a video question, and then record yourself giving me the names of those students cleared to submit questions or send those names to me in an email. Send that list-of-students file or email at the same time as your students are submitting their questions.

If in doubt, send the questions as an email rather than a video question. We do not need parental permission to use email questions. We also plan to have a video camera available that we can lend to classrooms if you'd rather videotape questions instead of using a webcam.
