Humans have been hunting with birds for at least 5,000 years, and in Idaho the practice has become increasingly popular thanks to ample public lands and raptor advocates. The Art of Falconry on Outdoor Idaho explores the unique relationship between human and hawk. Filmmakers uncover the beauty of bird flight and dive into the mind of the falconer and the history of hunting with birds.
In the making of this documentary, producer Lauren Melink was given a bird’s-eye view into the life of a falconer. “I was so impressed by their dedication. While producing this program, I quickly understood that practicing falconry is more of a lifestyle than a hobby—and this is why we’re calling it The Art of Falconry, because it really is a labor of love.” This program kicks off the 41st season of Outdoor Idaho and in doing so will undoubtedly invoke curiosity and fascination with Idaho’s birds of prey.
The Art of Falconry airs Thursday, Oct. 26, at 8 PM and again Sunday, Oct. 29, at 7 PM. It will be available for free streaming through the PBS app and online at video.idahoptv.org.
