(June 1944-August 1944) On June 6, 1944 (D-Day), 1.5 million Allied troops embark on the invasion of France and succeed in tearing a 45-mile gap in Hitler's Atlantic Wall. Allied progress from there is measured yard-by-dangerous-yard. In the Pacific, Saipan is the costliest Pacific battle to date. Dreaded War Department telegrams arrive on doorsteps at home.
