In August 1910, a massive wildfire sweeps across the Northern Rockies, including parts of the Idaho Panhandle, devouring more than 3 million acres in 36 hours. More than 78 firefighters perish in the flames. A third of the town of Wallace is destroyed. The catastrophe defines the fledgling U.S. Forest Service and the nation's fire policy for much of the 20th century. G
