Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World: American Experience  "Into the Deep, Whaling & the World"  Filmmaker Ric Burns tells an epic tale of three centuries of American whaling and the unique relationship between the hunter and the hunted, which begins in earnest in 1690 among the Quakers on Nantucket Island. The film explores two events that anchor whaling in the American consciousness. The Essex is rammed and sunk off the coast of Peru in 1820 by a sperm whale as long as the ship itself. Only eight sailors survive. In 1840, Herman Melville ships out on a whaling vessel that meets another vessel near where the Essex sank. The son of an Essex survivor gives Melville a copy of his father's memoir, which inspires Moby Dick.G

Osborne transformed the British theater with his 1956 play Look Back in Anger (now being revived in NYC at The Roundabout Theatre). He became one of England's most revered and successful writers, all the while suffering from bouts of depression, self-destructive drinking and hidden anguish. D

As he's sworn in as secretary of state under President Reagan, the war in Lebanon presents a dangerous diplomatic challenge. D

Turmoil and Triumph: The George Shultz Years (Pbs)  "To Start The World Again"  Philippines dissident Nimoy Aquino is assassinated and the island nation is thrown into turmoil. The administration continues to be concerned with the Nicaraguan Contras and with the release of hostages in Iran. As Reagan is sworn in for his second term, Shultz works to set up a summit meeting with the new Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev. D

Turmoil and Triumph: The George Shultz Years (Pbs)  "Swords Into Plowshares"  Shultz is in the midst of preparations for the summit meeting between Reagan and Gorbachev in Reykjavik, Iceland, when news breaks that the United States was indeed trading arms for the Nicaraguan Contras to secure the release of the Iran hostages, and Newsweek reveals that the CIA is mining the harbor in Managua. The Reykjavik summit leads to the most significant nuclear arms reduction pact of the Cold War and is the pinnacle of Shultz' career in government service. In January 1989, Shultz leaves the State Department. D
