THE RECONSTRUCTION OF ASA CARTER explores the life and legacy of the best-selling novelist of The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales (republished in 1975 as Gone to Texas) and The Education of Little Tree (1976). Billed as an autobiographical story about an orphaned Native American boy, The Education of Little Tree was later revealed as a complete fabrication. The author: notorious white supremacist and Ku Klux Klan leader Asa Earl Carter (under the name Forrest Carter), the writer responsible for George Wallace's infamous 1963 "Segregation now!
