In this opening episode, Jerry takes his viewers through the process of understanding the proper use of multiple pieces of reference material. Then discusses sketching in the tree trunk and raccoons. Chef's Life  "Onions and Avetts"  Spring onions kick off the season as Vivian takes a break from penning her first cookbook to prepare dinner for beginner farmers. Though the Avett Brothers make an appearance, the underdog spring onion steals the show, playing both star and support. D

Joanne Weir's Plates and Places  "Taste of Alsace"  Experience Alsace, France as Joanne explores the quaint and picturesque town of Riquewihr and learns about Alsatian tarts, pretzels and one of her favorite food wines, Riesling. Recipes: Maldon salt pretzels; Tarte flambe. D

This Old House  "Charleston Smithies"  The old piazza columns are restored offsite. Blacksmith students at a local college for the building arts fabricate the iron gate. Modern light fixtures are selected for an old house. D

Globe Trekker  "Papua New Guinea Islands"  The trekkers explore New Britain Island, the largest in the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. Inhabited by the indigenous Papuans and the Austronesians, the island was captured by the Japanese during World War II. Today the island's traditional cultures are diverse and complex but there are several ancient traditions that remain active today, especially the Dukduk Secret Society. D

Lidia's Kitchen  "Heartwarming Favorites"  Today, Lidia creates the ultimate heartwarming dinner table filled with dishes that deliver flavor, comfort and love in every bite. She starts with a soothing rice and lentil soup topped with cheese and olive oil; roasted olives with orange and rosemary are an exciting accompaniment to any meal; and ricotta meatloaf, a family favorite, packed with cheese and topped with fresh tomato sauce and even more cheese is the star of the show. Simply Ming  "Icelandic Lamb with Chef Thrainn Freyr Vigfusson"  It's all about Icelandic lamb this week on Simply Ming. Ming visits a fifth-generation farm in the Icelandic countryside where lamb is herded from the mountains to the mossy, grassy fields. Then, he meets up with chef Thrainn Freyr Vigfusson at his Lebanese and Moroccan food-inspired restaurant, Sumac, in downtown Reykjavik to prepare lamb. D

Kitchen Wisdom of Cecilia Chiang  "Last Flight Out of Shanghai"  Less than a decade after fleeing the Japanese, Cecilia now married and with a young family, caught the last flight out of Shanghai as the communist revolution swept over China. The family relocated to Tokyo where, at a dinner for an ambassador, Cecilia got her first taste of raw fish. Cecilia didn't love it and didn't love living as an ex-pat in the land of her former occupiers, so she sailed on the SS Woodrow Wilson into San Francisco to visit her number seven sister. D

Born to Explore with Richard Wiese  "Cyprus: Cleopatra's Secret Island"  Richard Wiese travels to the Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus steeped in ancient tales of love and intrigue. He joins world-famous archeologist Dr. Joan Connelly, who is digging for clues to confirm the existence of a sacred temple built by Cleopatra to honor her love child with Julius Caesar. Richard visits the organic farm and restaurant of one of Cyprus' most celebrated chefs, and learns about the famous "tatsia" dance. D
