Death and the Civil War: American Experience   Producer/director Ric Burns draws from the book This Republic of Suffering by historian and Harvard president Drew Gilpin Faust to explore the implications of the war's staggering and unprecedented death toll. The mortalities transformed hundreds of thousands of individual lives - North and South - and the nation itself, leaving scars still visible. The film examines the war's increasingly lethal years and concludes with a section on postwar efforts toward reburial and remembrance.G
