Taste of Louisiana with Chef John Folse & Co.: Our Food Heritage  "German Christmas"  Chef Folse celebrates a traditional German Christmas with Glenn Falgoust, Frieda Arwe and Josie Thevis as they share stories of German contributions to the cultural fabric of Louisiana. Even St. Nicholas joins in the kitchen fun. D

Burt Wolf: What We Eat  "The Hand That Stirred The Pot: African Foods In America"  Burt seeks the origins of peanuts, bananas, watermelon, rice, yams and okra.G

Burt Wolf: Travels & Traditions  "Getting Ready for Christmas at Biltmore Estate"  The Biltmore Estate in Ashville, North Carolina, is the largest private home in the United States. It was built by George Vanderbilt, the grandson of the wealthiest man in the world. We tour the estate with Burt and see how they prepare for Biltmore's Christmas celebration. D

Burt Wolf: Travels & Traditions  "Celebrating Christmas at Biltmore Estate"  Burt returns to The Biltmore Estate for the second part of his investigation into our Christmas traditions. Why do we have Christmas Trees and why are they covered with electric lights? Who introduced the glass tree ornament and why? How did we get into the habit of wrapping our presents and what do they really symbolize? These and dozens of other Christmas customs are explained in this fascinating and surprising program. D

Katie Brown Workshop  "Christmas"  Katie prepares a no-stress holiday meal with the help of the Workshop crew. Chef Chris Paulk whips up red pepper risotto, pork tenderloin and Kentucky eggnog. Then, Katie decks the halls with an advent calendar and a dressed-up Styrofoam Christmas tree. D

Travelscope: Christmas In Switzerland   Host Joseph Rosendo journeys to Lausanne, Montreux and Basel to bask in the glow of a Swiss-style Christmas at holiday markets, on a scenic train ride, and atop a Ferris wheel. He witnesses a 600-year-old clock-tower tradition in Lausanne.G

Burt Wolf: Taste of Freedom  "Kwanzaa"  From December 26 to January 1 is a holiday of reflection, an opportunity for African Americans to celebrate their roots in Africa.G

9:00 pm 
Burt Wolf: Taste of Freedom  "Hanukkah"  Wolf uncovers the history of the worldwide Jewish holiday and explains why potato pancakes and doughnuts are served.G

9:30 pm 
Food Trip with Todd English  "Israel: Land of Milk and Honey"  Todd English makes a culinary pilgrimage back to Israel after a thirteen-year hiatus where he and other notable American chefs cooked, ate and got to know the Israeli culture. Eating his way from Akko to Nazareth then Jerusalem, Todd stops to visit Holy sites such as the Wailing Wall and the Crusader City. He concludes his food trip with a traditional Chanukah dinner. D

P. Allen Smith's Garden Home  "Garden Home for the Holidays"  Allen brings garden elements inside for decorating tips for the cold months. He shares timesaving holiday recipes with ties to the garden and provides history on winter holidays.G

Social Studies In Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12  "Creating Effective Citizens"  This program explores how social studies teachers in any grade level can help their students develop the democratic values that will make them effective and responsible citizens. Teachers are shown helping students see their community in a broader sense and inspiring them to think about ways they can make a difference. The classroom lessons emphasize how civic processes work, how to discuss issues from multiple perspectives, and how teachers can inspire their students to take social action. D

Social Studies In Action: A Teaching Practices Library, K-12  "Introduction to the Video Library"  This program presents the purpose of the Social Studies in Action video library. It introduces all the components of the library, explains the goals of NCSS, and presents examples of classroom lessons throughout the library. This program also addresses a variety of ways in which the library can be used for enhancing the curriculum, teacher reflection, and best practices for teaching. D
