Primary Sources: Workshops In American History  "The Lowell System: Women in a New Industrial Society"  In the earliest days of American industry, the Boston Manufacturing Company created an innovative, single-location manufacturing enterprise at Lowell that depended on the recruitment of female mill workers. This workshop debates the impact of this new form of employment on workers - for better or for worse. Participants investigate the workers' experiences first-hand, through diaries, letters, published accounts, and official mill postings.G

Join Burt Wolf as he explores how Chinese Americans celebrate this holiday, learns why it's important to clean your house before the New Year, introduces you to the Kitchen God, shows you the art of making dumplings and explains the meaning of the Lion Dance. In this episode, Edgar experiences the power of the movement first hand at the Reggae Sumfest and Fully Loaded festivals. Top stars Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and others tear up the stage as capacity crowds express their appreciation with homemade flamethrowers and explicit dance moves. D

Art Wolfe's Travels to the Edge  "Australia: Arnhemland and the Kimberley"  In Australia's Northern Territory, the place of "Dreamtime" for Aboriginal people, Art captures images of intricately painted rock art and canyons carved by wind and water. He chronicles the connection between the region's first people and the natural world.G

Music Voyager  "The Capital of Salsa"  The Colombian city of Cali, known as the world capital of salsa, also serves as the urban center of the country's Afro-Pacific culture. Host Jacob Edgar discovers why Columbia adopted as its native style the upbeat tropical dance music of salsa. He meets Grupo Niche, one of the world's most famous salsa bands, for a performance at their private club Dulce con Dulce, and explores the famous Juanchito neighborhood where salsa clubs line the streets. D

Rudy Maxa's World  "Buenos Aires, Argentina"  The style and verve of one of South America's most beautiful capitals is the focus of this episode that highlights Argentina's national dance, the tango, as well as the energy that its diverse population brings to the urban landscape. The HD lens brings to the fore the graceful and classic architecture of Buenos Aires, exemplified by the San Telmo neighborhood whose Sunday market is traditionally closed at sunset by an impromptu street band that marches through the streets, collecting dancers and revelers with its insistent drumbeats. At local tango parlors called milongas, Buenos Aires residents, known as portenos, lend an air of authenticity to the dance that grew up in the working class neighborhoods of the city. D

On the coast, Rick visits the Algarve, explores Cape Sagres and savors pristine beaches.G
