This magnificent epic was saved from destruction at the hands of the Spanish by Quiche chroniclers. Once repressed, the story is now interwoven with the history of today's Mayan people. D

Invitation to World Literature  "Candide"  A satirical novel following the travails of Candide, a hopeless optimist whose faith in his tutor's mantra that his is "the best of all possible worlds" is tested beyond all limits. Volaire's challenge to the aristocracy of his day proves refreshingly amusing and biting today. Original illustrations, songs, and comic book figures plumb the depths of this satire. D

Frank Clarke Simply Painting Around The World: China  "National Museum of Art"  Returning to modern-day China, Frank visits two exhibitions of contemporary Chinese artists and provides insight into the techniques used in traditional Chinese painting. D

He ends in Assisi - the hometown of St. Francis - which retains its spiritual aura to this day. D

New Scandinavian Cooking  "Arctic Food"  In today's episode, Andreas visits Spitsbergen, the Norwegian settlement at 78 degrees north. In spite of the perpetual cold and barren surroundings, the area is home to some of the world's richest fisheries. Andreas also forages for arctic mushrooms and meets what is probably the world's northernmost farmer. D

The Great American Seafood Cook-Off VI   In August 2013, a group of accomplished and up-and-coming chefs representing 16 states gathered in New Orleans to compete in the annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off. The contest gave the chefs one hour to showcase their culinary talents in a dish using domestic seafood native to their home states. Then, a discriminating panel of judges made up of executive chefs, food magazine editors and a representative from The James Beard Foundation sampled the results and crowned a winner. D

Burt Wolf: Travels & Traditions  "Sailing The Danube"  The Danube River flows through nine countries and is one of the great rivers of Europe. In this program, Burt Wolf guides us along the Danube. First stop is Nuremberg, where we take a look at the works of Albrecht Durer, a master artist of the 14th century. D
