In Search of Myths and Heroes  "Shangri-La"  The third of Michael Wood's historical journeys takes viewers on a thrilling trek through India, Nepal and Tibet in search of Shangri-La. The tale of the magical valley hidden behind the Himalayas was popularized in the 1930s movie Lost Horizon, but the myth of a secret earthly paradise is much older. To find the truth behind the legend, Wood travels on foot through some of the world's most sacred mountains before finally reaching the fantastic ruins of a lost city, which he believes is the real inspiration behind the myth. Making Meaning In Literature: A Workshop for Teachers, Grades 6-8  "Workshop 9. Starting In September...."  The concluding program takes a close look at the ways in which teachers get ready to help their students become successful and engaged readers. During the first few days of classes, the teachers talk about everything — from the mundane to the sublime — that enters their minds as they start another year and plan for success. Dr. Langer underscores their remarks with advice for teachers who want to recreate the kinds of classrooms they have seen featured in this workshop. D

In Search of the Novel  "Why Do I Have to Read This Book?"  The workshop's 10 novels are examined to see why they appear on recommended reading lists and why they have earned numerous awards. The program looks at the essential elements of good writing and storytelling and explores positive reasons for reading. Primal Grill with Steven Raichlen  "Smoke Screen"  The BARBECUE UNIVERSITY professor embarks on a new series with an intercontinental view of the world's oldest and most primal cooking method. He begins the odyssey with a demonstration of four ways to smoke a variety of foods, using a traditional offset barrel smoker, a water smoker, a charcoal grill and a stovetop smoker.G

Joanne Weir's Cooking Confidence  "Pizza with Pizazz"  Joanne welcomes her student Geoffto class with a quick and easy salmon and pickled onion pizza. Then together they explore the idea of contrasts of flavor, texture, and color, making lemon turkey cutlets and an arugula and orange salad. Recipes: Lavash Pizza with Herb Salad, Arugula and Orange Salad, and Lemon Turkey Cutlets. D

Ask This Old House  "Building a Porch Railing; Selecting Stone for Building Walls"  General contractor Tom Silva helps two homeowners build a railing for their porch. Then Tom, along with host Kevin O'Connor, landscape contractor Roger Cook, and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, asks, "What Is It?" Afterward, Roger and Kevin visit a stoneyard to learn about stone used to build walls. D

Rick Steves' Europe  "Dubrovnik and Balkan Side-Trips"  From Dubrovnik, a remarkably preserved medieval fortress city, Rick ventures into less-visited corners of the former Yugoslavia. In Bosnia, he visits Mostar. In Montenegro, he sails the fjord-like Bay of Kotor.G

Equitrekking  "Georgia Coast"  On Sea Island, Equitrekking host Darley Newman rides with a naturalist and tries what the island natives call "swim riding." On secluded Cumberland Island, Darley observes wild horses with local naturalist Fred Whitehead, who speaks about herd dynamics, the history of horses on the island and how they survive in the subtropical environment. Darley stays at the island's only lodging, the historic Greyfield Inn, and learns about the Carnegie family's role in the island's history. D

From there, we visit La Merced - the sprawling, spectacular central market that's the culinary soul of a city with 20 million mouths to feed - where chiles are bought and sold by the thousands.
